Responsibilities
Referral Processing:
- Receiving and processing referrals from primary care physicians and other healthcare providers.
- Ensuring all necessary information is included in the referral, such as patient demographics, insurance details, and clinical background.
- Verifying patient eligibility and insurance benefits.
- Obtaining necessary pre-authorization or prior approvals from insurance companies.
Scheduling and Coordination:
- Scheduling appointments for patients with specialists, diagnostic tests, and procedures.
- Coordinating with specialists and other healthcare providers to ensure smooth transitions of care.
- Communicating with patients to confirm appointments and provide clear instructions.
Documentation and Record Keeping:
- Maintaining accurate and up-to-date records of patient referrals and appointments.
- Tracking the status of referrals and ensuring timely follow-up.
Patient Communication and Education:
- Serving as a point of contact for patients and their families, answering questions and addressing concerns regarding referrals.
- Providing patients with information about their referrals, including expectations and procedures.
- Educating patients on their conditions and treatment plans.
Other Duties:
- May assist with patient registration and insurance verification.
- May be involved in case management or care coordination activities.
- May work with financial services to ensure accurate billing and reimbursement.
Skills & Qualifications
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Knowledge of healthcare terminology and procedures.
- Familiarity with insurance verification and authorization processes.
- Proficiency in computer systems and electronic health records (EHR).
- Ability to handle sensitive patient information with confidentiality.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred.
